What’s it about?
“AFRO’d & I’m PROUD!” is an art series dedicated to embracing and loving 4c hair. It’s a play on James Brown’s famous revolutionary song, “Say it Loud, I’m Black & I’m Proud!” Much like how Brown gave dignity and pride to a race of people who had been taught to hate their skin color; “AFRO’d & I’m PROUD” speaks to the girls & women who have been taught to hate their hair texture and curl pattern–I, myself, am one of them.
A Shameful Past
Quite honestly, I remember when the natural hair movement began, I coveted the “beautiful” and “exotic” curl patterns. I tried so hard to get my hair to look like that; and when it didn’t, I cursed it and permed it. Sadly, I could write an endless list of the disrespectful things I’ve heard and/or said about this hair texture. But there is light at the end of the tunnel!
A Bright Future
For the past 4 years, I’ve been making art dedicated to women of color and natural hair. I thought I was crusading for future generations to be able to see themselves and their unique features as beautiful. What I didn’t realize was that I was also on my own path to healing and forgiveness.
Recently, I have begun to follow 4c gurus and pin hairstyles. And I cannot say how GRATEFUL I am to have this new found love and pride–something I, quite frankly, NEVER imagined. It’s truly a thin line between love and hate.
